People & Culture
Staunton has always been shaped by the people who live and work here. This section covers the artists, organizers, educators, business owners, and longtime residents who make the city what it is, plus the cultural institutions, traditions, and events that give the Queen City its character.
Local History
Staunton was founded in 1747 and has been accumulating history ever since. It served as capital of the Northwest Territory from 1738 to 1770, hosted the Virginia legislature during the Revolution, and became a transportation hub after the Virginia Central Railroad arrived in 1854. It was also the first American city to adopt the city-manager form of government, in 1908. This section collects what we've written about the people, places, and events that shaped the Queen City.
Queen City Mischief & Magic
Everything you need to know about Queen City Mischief & Magic, Staunton's annual wizarding world festival.
Outdoors & Recreaction
Staunton sits in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley, with the Blue Ridge to the east and George Washington National Forest to the west. This section covers trails, parks, greenways, and seasonal outdoor destinations in and around the city.
